The phrase “Trust in God” is one that is very familiar among Christians because we are often encouraged to do so in Church. When we face a challenge or a situation where we need a breakthrough, its not uncommon for us to be encouraged by fellow believers or Pastors to trust God. Many times, when we hear the word “trust”, we view it in the light of what we know about trusting a person. Sometimes, we think we trust in the Lord but our actions say otherwise.

If you pray to God for money, for instance, but you are looking up to a friend to give you the money you need, can you really say you are trusting God? Or, if you have been praying to God for a miracle but the situation around makes it look as though that miracle cannot happen, and somewhere in your heart you begin to doubt and begin to plan for an alternative, can you really claim to trust God for that miracle?

As I said, many times, we think we trust God, but our actions say otherwise. So the real question is, what does it mean to trust in God?

The word “trust” simply means firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something. So when we talk about trusting God, we are talking about having a firm belief in the reliability, truth, and ability of God. From this definition, there are four important points to take note of.

When we talk about trusting God, we are talking about having a firm belief in the reliability, truth, and ability of God

First is “firm belief”. Your belief in God (his reliability, truth, and ability) must be firm. To be firm means to be unshaken. When you trust in the Lord, you believe in his reliability, truth, and ability. Even when you pray and God does not answer, you do not doubt his ability to answer. The fact that you asked God for something and He has not answered does not mean He cannot answer. Trust, as a firm belief in God is what will make you say like Job, “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him” (Job 13:15).

Second is “reliability”. Without a revelation of the reliability of God, you cannot trust in God. Numbers 23:19 says “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” To trust in God is to be confident in the reliability of God. 2 Timothy 2:13 says “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” Friend, God is even more reliable than the air we breathe. Even if the air fails, God cannot fail. God lacks the capacity to be unreliable. And our revelation of this fact is what establishes our heart firmly in trust.

God is even more reliable than the air we breathe. Even if the air fails, God cannot fail. God lacks the capacity to be unreliable.

Third is “truth”. Every word of God is truth. Hebrews 6:17-18 says “Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie…” John 17:17 says “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” When you trust God, you are confident in the fact that whatever God says is truth. Truth is always true. Whatever God says is truth, even when the circumstances say otherwise. When you trust in God, you are confident in His word. You cannot claim to trust in God and not trust in what He says.

Lastly is “ability”. When you trust in God, it means you are confident in his ability to do whatever you desire or demand from God. Matthew 19:26 says “with God all things are possible”. Jeremiah 32:27 says “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?” Until you have a revelation of the ability of God, and you are confident in the omnipotence of God, you cannot claim to trust in God. Every iota of doubt in the ability of God is a dent in your trust in God.

In conclusion, trust is the basis of faith. Hebrews 11:6 says that without faith it is impossible to please God. Habakkuk 2:4, Romans 1:17, Galatians 3:11, and Hebrews 10:38 say that the just shall live by faith. You cannot doubt the truth, reliability, or the ability of God and claim to have faith, or even claim to please God or live a life of righteousness. This is why trust is so critical. If you want to see your faith work wonders in your life, get rooted in your trust in God.
